Proposed New Plan of Vatnsmyri

The City of Reykjavik is holding a competition to convert a small airport, called "Vatnsmyri", to an expansion of the City. The airport was built during the Second World War and was an important base for the Allied Forces.

This proposal responds accordingly to the public's input included in the competition brief. Specifically, there seemed a want for planning and architecture with a sense of permanance, walkability, and character. The proposal uses a centuries old tradition of adapting while remembering, by turning the existing, long runways into grand, tree-lined boulevards in the vein of other classical European cities, which was another consideration put forth. Sometime in the future, pedestrians enjoying one of these boulevards will be reminded that this once was an airport that played an important role in the victory in the most important war of the 20th century.

This is a competition entry.
