Water Street District, Naperville, IL
Naperville was recently named #2 on Money Magazine's Best Places to Live. The downtown is quite lively with many restaurants and shops that serve as a destination for much of the surrounding area. The West Branch of the Dupage River runs through the downtown, and there currently is a small stretch of Riverwalk.
This project is on the south side of the River, which is not as dense and active as the north side. Its aim is to bring a true presence to the south side of the river, and take people from the north side to a Water Street that is a vibrant district. The project consists of several buildings, all of which are mixed-use buildings, with commercial space on the first floor and residential space on the second floor.
The main space in the district is the plaza that connects the lower level of the Riverwalk to the street level. A fountain and grand steps would lead down from the plaza level to the Riverwalk level. The main block of the district holds the parking deck, that serves not only the residences but also the businesses. The liner buildings hide the parking deck from the street.
Opticos Design, Inc. assisted in the initial design charette for this project. Sullivan Goulette Wilson Architects serves as the Architect of Record.
The value of the project is expected to be $96 million.
